AI for Small Business

Do Not Start With ‘AI Everything.’ Start With One Repetitive Task.

The fastest way to waste money on AI is to automate a process nobody has defined. Start with one repeated task that consumes owner time, map the steps, decide what still requires human judgment, and then test whether AI actually improves the workflow.

Pick one low-risk workflow

Choose a repetitive task with clear inputs and outputs. Good early experiments are easier to review and do not put customers, money, compliance or reputation at unnecessary risk.

Map the current process first

Write down what happens today, who does it, what information is used, where delays occur and what a good result looks like. Automation cannot fix a process the business has never defined.

Keep humans where judgment matters

AI can assist with drafting, organizing and pattern recognition, but consequential decisions still need accountable human review. Define the review step before launch.

Protect information

Do not place private, regulated or sensitive information into tools that have not been approved for that use. Convenience is not a substitute for information governance.

Measure before expanding

Track whether the test saves time, improves consistency or reduces errors. Expand because the evidence supports it — not because AI is fashionable.

The BTB Takeaway

Track whether the test saves time, improves consistency or reduces errors. Expand because the evidence supports it — not because AI is fashionable.
